đź’ĄWhat are we looking for?
We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to take a key role in the evolution of Embat’s Payments and Banking domain.
This is a high-impact, high-ownership role. You will help define the technical foundations of our financial infrastructure, make long-term architectural decisions, and influence how we scale payments and banking products to tens of countries and millions of transactions.
As a Staff Engineer, you are not only a strong individual contributor but also a technical leader with horizontal impact: someone who raises the bar across teams, mentors other engineers, and partners closely with Product and Leadership to turn complex business problems into robust technical solutions.
Our stack is built with Node.js and TypeScript, running on Google Cloud Platform, designed to scale fast without compromising on security, correctness, or reliability, which are non-negotiable in financial systems.
đź’ĄWhat will you do?
Own the technical strategy and architecture of Embat’s Payments and Banking infrastructure, from design to production and long-term evolution.
Build and scale globally distributed systems capable of handling millions of financial transactions with high reliability and correctness.
Lead the development of new financial capabilities, including payments, banking integrations, ledgers, and core money movement services.
Make and drive strategic technical decisions that shape the future of Embat’s financial platform.
Act as a horizontal technical leader, driving alignment and best practices across multiple engineering teams.
Mentor engineers at all levels through code reviews, design sessions, 1:1s, and hands-on collaboration.
Champion engineering excellence by defining and evangelizing standards around quality, testing, security, and scalability.
Collaborate closely with Product, Risk, and Operations to translate complex financial requirements into elegant technical solutions.
Lead the resolution of the most complex technical challenges, setting a benchmark for engineering quality.
Actively participate in technical interviews and hiring decisions, helping scale the team with top talent.
Safeguard Embat’s culture, values, and engineering mindset as we grow.
What are we looking for?
Extensive experience as a Backend or Platform Engineer, with deep exposure to payments, banking, or financial services systems.
Proven experience in at least one of the following:
Building global payment infrastructure across local and SWIFT rails with high success rates.
Designing and operating financial ledger systems processing millions of transactions.
Developing complex financial products (payments, FX, lending, trading, or similar).
Strong background in distributed systems, system design, and scalable architectures.
High standards for correctness, security, observability, and operational excellence.
Ability to influence without authority and drive alignment across teams.
Strong communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical topics to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
A mentoring mindset: you enjoy helping others grow and raising the overall level of the team.
Pragmatic but ambitious: you know when to aim for perfection and when “good enough” is the right trade-off.
Team-first attitude: humility, collaboration, and ownership are non-negotiable.
Background in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
Languages: Working proficiency in English & fluent in Spanish.
Location: Madrid (hybrid).
Additionally, any of the below would definitely be great:
Experience with Node.js, TypeScript, GCP, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud-native architectures.
Hands-on knowledge of security, compliance, and data protection in financial systems.
Experience in FinTech, banking, or regulated environments.
Previous experience scaling systems internationally.
Strong opinions, backed by experience, and the confidence to challenge ideas constructively.
